  8. fission reaction:  A fission reaction is a type of nuclear reaction.  It changes the basic structure of an atom.  In a fission reaction, an atom is split, forming two new atoms.  In the process, a huge amount of energy is released.  Fission reactions have been used for decades for the production of energy.  Unfortunately, fission reactions create radioactive waste, which is harmful to life.
